Brothers and Sisters, we’d like to wish you a belated Ramadhaan Mubaarak. We hope you’re all having a blessed month and drawing closer to the words of Allaah through your fasting and taraweeh.
It has been a long time since we have last posted on to the blog, mainly due to our busy study schedules in Egypt but nevertheless, it isn’t an excuse for not having taken some time out to post onto the blog. So forgive us for that. InshaaAllaah we intend to resume work on this blog regularly once again and to start with, we will be posting the long-awaited second video of Shaykh Ayman’s Tajweed series. We promised you these months ago, but subhaanallaah, although the two subsequent videos had been translated long ago, adding the subtitles onto the videos takes a very long time. Perhaps we’re using a program that doesn’t make the whole process efficient. If anyone knows of a software that is really good for this – and can also display arabic text subtitles – we would be very grateful if you could share it with us. Anyhow, you can expect the second video by tonight or early tomorrow morning inshaaAllaah.

Our local masjid here in Cairo, recently held a Qur’aan recitation competition. Tons of people entered, men, women, young and old. The masjid was jam-packed maashaAllaah. A few days later they announced the winners after taraweeh and a special guest recitor was invited. He was a young Shaykh (probably around 25 or younger) but sitting there in the masjid and listening to him recite sent shivers down my spine. It was so breathtaking and beautiful, I didn’t want him to stop. Hearing beautiful recitation in person and hearing it recorded on an audio or video just isn’t the same. And I found that out that night.
There is something about Egypt and Egyptians that make them stand out with regards to the Qur’aan and their striving towards acquiring its knowledge. There is such a love for the Qur’aan here and not just any recitation, but correct, precise recitation with tajweed, and people crowd around the masaajid just to listen to recitation in person and they appreciate when they hear the Qur’aan beautified.
There is a famous saying that I came to know of during my stay here. It is said:
The Qur’aan was revealed in Makkah, written in Istanbul and recited in Misr.

Assalaamu ‘Aleykum waRahmatullaahi waBarakaatuh,
This blog is run by a husband and wife (Aboo and Ummu ‘Abdillaah) who want to share their journey towards memorising the Qur’aan with other muslims across the globe (particularly those living in the West) who are driven by the same goal. There are many websites out there concerning the Qur’aan but we have not come across anything ourselves that solely focuses on memorisation of the Book of Allaah.
We hope to provide you with quality advice, tools and materials that will aid your memorisation and make it easier. This blog is unique because it will be giving you two perspectives when it comes to memorising the Qur’aan; one of a husband who is memorising the Qur’aan for the first time and the other of a wife who has already memorised the Qur’aan and is now looking to move on to memorising the other recitations.
Both of us live in the West, do not speak Arabic – nor are we Arab – and have not memorised any portion of the Qur’aan when we were younger (other than al-Faatihah and a few soorahs in Juz ‘Amma). So as you can see, we are in pretty much the same boat [...]

So as you can see, we are in pretty much the same boat as the majority of people living in the West. To many of us faced with the obstacle of not knowing the Arabic language, memorising the Qur’aan may seem like a daunting, unattainable task. But we want to show you that with the right intention, hard work, effort and dedication, you can be a Haafidh.

As we are writing this, we are living in London and I (Aboo ‘Abdillaah) am 24 now and have just completed memorising three juz, walhamdulillaah. My wife (Ummu ‘Abdillaah, also 24 now) memorised the Qur’aan all by herself due to lack of teachers around her and she was 18 when she first even thought about taking on this noble goal. She had no sister who memorised, reviewed or tested her. Her only partner was her mushaf and Allaah. So she is living proof that even with no support and assistance, you can fulfil your goal. Allaah has blessed me by making her my wife as well as my teacher. Most of you probably aren’t used to hearing that a brother learns from his wife so I’d like to take this opportunity to tell all my brothers in Islaam who are married, that just because Allaah has granted us a degree above our wives, it shouldn’t prevent us from humbling ourselves and benefitting from whatever knowledge Allaah has imparted to them. Study, learn and recite the Qur’aan together. It is one of the greatest things you can share with one another and will increase your love inshaaAllaah.

This blog will cover numerous topics regarding Hifdh; general memorisation tips, methods and techniques, resources for making memorisation easier, resources for learning tajweed to aid your memorisation, audios and biographies of the Qurraa (recitors of the Qur’aan), accounts of those who memorised the Qur’aan and much more.

Finally, our purpose in creating this blog is to help you all become memorisers of Allaah’s Book. That being said, we would appreciate your input and suggestions to make it better and more beneficial.

May Allaah’s Blessings and Peace be upon His Last Messenger, Muhammad ibn ‘Abdillaah.
