Getting to know your Mushaf

We thought it would be beneficial to write a short post on the layout of the ‘Uthmaani mushaf.

There are 114 Suwar (plural of soorah) in the mushaf, the first of which is al-Faatihah and the last is an-Naas.

The suwar are grouped in sections called ajzaa (plural of Juz). There are exactly 30 Juz in the Qur’aan and each one is approximately ten pages long (one page being both the back and front sides). When you encounter a new Juz, it is marked with a symbol on the margin like that shown below.

The text below the Juz number tells you which hizb you are on. A hizb is basically half a Juz (i.e. five pages in total) and therefore, there are 60 ahzaab (plural of ahzaab) in the Qur’aan.

There is another symbol that appears in the mushaf which tells you how much you have read of one hizb. A hizb is split into quarters (Rub’ – one quarter, nisf – half, thuluth – three quarters) and the following symbols tell you which quarter you are at.
